What to Do If You Have a Dental Emergency
A dental emergency is never fun to deal with, especially when an unexpected or traumatic accident occurs. Biting on something hard or tripping and falling can occasionally result in a cracked, chipped, loosened, or knocked-out tooth.
Knowing how to handle the situation can make a big difference in the long run. Below are the steps that you should take when one of these scenarios happens to you or a loved one.
Remain Calm
First and foremost, try your best to remain calm. This can be easier said than done when you’re in pain or shock, but keeping a level head will help you to act swiftly and smartly. If you cannot breathe or you have a fever, you should go straight to the emergency room.
Gather Any Remaining Pieces
If your tooth is chipped, look around for the tooth remains and collect them. If you’re able to, wrap the pieces in a wet towel or gauze. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress if you are in pain.
If your entire tooth gets knocked out, attempt to place the tooth back into your gum socket, holding it from the crown with a clean towel. Leave any attached tissue on the tooth. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it off with water, but do not scrub it. If you’re unable to insert the tooth back into the socket, hold the tooth under your tongue while you call the dentist. If you are able to get ahold of your dentist, keep the tooth in coconut water or Gatorade until you are able to see the dentist for reimplantation.
